START OF SCHOOL
We have had a wonderfully settled start to the school year with all students settling into their classes and preparing for the learning that will take place during the year. This year we have increased our local enrolments establishing a 19th class which is very exciting. Over the coming weeks we will be receiving some new orders of furniture so if your child’s class does not have the best equipment just yet don’t worry as it is on its way.
Last week we held our annual swimming carnival which went off superbly. The organising team are to be congratulated for their work in managing such a successful carnival! The kids had a lovely time and the novelty events were a massive hit! The change of venue to Lambton Pool also seemed to be very successful and we will endeavour to maintain this relationship into the future.
During the course of the year talented athletes are selected at the school level to participate in trials to be selected in the zone sporting teams. These teams then go on to selections for Regional and State Representation. Often there are opportunities for children who compete in sports outside of school to participate at this level. Any parents who would like to nominate their child for participation in a zone trial will need to complete the online registration by following this link: https://sites.google.com/education.nsw.gov.au/newcastlepssa/home?authuser=0
An email is then automatically generated to the school and to the convener of the sport.

ADDITIONS TO THE SCHOOL!
A huge thanks to our art teacher, Alison Drinkwater, who has created a sensory board for our students. It looks fantastic and has already proven to be quite popular with many of the children. We are also the proud owners of a very colourful giraffe, beautifully painted by Ann Snell and some of our students. We think they did a beautiful job and our giraffe now has pride of place in our front garden.
DOGS IN SCHOOL
A friendly reminder that dogs are not allowed on school grounds. The Department of Education identifies that all dogs can pose some risk to students particularly large numbers of children who are moving noisily and quickly at pick up and drop off times. Please refrain from bringing your dog onto the school grounds. If your child has received a puppy and would like to bring it in to show classmates please contact the school.
Please be aware of the parking zones in and around the school. Rangers are often in the area at pick up times and enforce parking rules stringently.
This year the school is undertaking a whole school performance. The performance will take place during the first week of Term 4 at NEX. Teachers have been working hard throughout the January holidays to develop the script which looks amazing. There will be opportunities for all children to perform. Soon the school will call for nominations for performers to take on roles in drama and any individual places. There will also be opportunities for students to participate in the production crew. In order to make this as stress – free for parents as possible the school will be asking for a $30 performance fee per child. This will cover the cost of all transport to and from the NEX for rehearsals and matinee performances as well as any student props and costumes. No need to search for those yellow socks at midnight the night before the show! Tickets will be an additional cost later in the year.
EARLY ARRIVALS AND LEAVERS
If your child needs to arrive early or leave early from school please contact the office to complete an early arrivals or an early leaver’s form.
ABSENTEEISM – SMS
Teachers mark rolls as soon as they go into class every day. If your child is not at school you will receive an SMS alert informing you of their absenteeism. We ask that all parents can respond directly to this SMS promptly informing us of any reasons why the child is absent from school.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
During weeks 4 and 5 of Term 1, commencing Monday 18th February and Monday 25th February teachers will be holding parent teacher interviews. The aim of these interviews is to set learning goals for your children that can be monitored and reported against at the end of term 2. It is important that you make a time to see your child’s teacher so as to have input into their goals.
If you have not done so as yet please download the NLSPS app from the app stores relevant for your device. A lot of information is communicated this way. We no longer use Skoolbag for correspondence.
CareMonkey is the schools mobile and online platform that allows permission notes to be sent directly to our families email address. CareMonkey enables us to send you electronic forms that are easy to complete on your phone, tablet or PC, minimising paper. All new families should now have received a link to set up your child’s profile. If you need any assistance setting up profiles please contact the office.
Invoices for school fees will be sent home shortly. The breakdown of school fees will be reflective of the resources and equipment that students use through the year as well as any additional costs for the year. It would be appreciated if these could be paid promptly. If you have any difficulties meeting these payments please contact the school.
As our school photos are taken in Term 4, MSP photography offer a special Kindergarten photo day at the commencement of the school year. Kindergarten photos will take place on 11 February 2019.
AFTERNOON COLLECTION TIME
We would like to remind families that the end of day bell rings at 3.25pm. If you are unable to collect your child at that time please organise suitable alternatives for your child. If you need to contact the office with a message please endeavour to do this prior to 3pm as we cannot guarantee children will receive the message after this time. The office can get extremely busy from 3pm.
